Principal's Report - 28 March 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you parents for working in partnership with us as we enter the final week of Term 1. I am so very proud of our students. They have committed to their learning and achieved growth. Students are to be commended on their conduct and manners. It is evident to community members that our students shine, and it is a privilege to lead a wonderful committed community.
The Prep enrolment process for 2026 is well under way with many applications already received. Any existing St Rita's families with a child born between 1 July 2020 - 30 June 2021 please ensure you enrol your child for Prep 2026 by next Friday. Follow this link to enrol https://www.stritascps.qld.edu.au/enrolment/apply-online/. Spread the word to any families you know who are looking for a school for their Prep 2026 child - we are hosting next Tuesday morning 1 April 9.30am - 10.30am, a Peek Into Prep morning. This time provides an opportunity for parents to meet with me to ask questions about our delivery of a world class education at St Rita's. The little tots can meet our wonderful Prep class and teacher, Ms Murphy and teacher aide, Ms Lisa.
Congratulations to Fitzgerald House for taking out the 2025 Cross Country trophy! An exciting afternoon with big cheers from family members. See Mr Herrmann's sports section for great photos.
St Rita's pride shone brightly recently as we enjoyed our pianists recital of music pieces from classic Beethoven to Harry Potter themed pieces.

We now move into the Church season of Easter. We will celebrate Easter next Thursday 8.45am at assembly through poetry and song performing Holy Week events. You are welcome to bring along special family members and friends.
Forward to a Better World, Mrs Bryan.
Sport News with Mr Herrmann - 28 March 2025
Hi St Rita's,
I’m thrilled after witnessing the fantastic performances in our cross-country event. Our students have shown incredible dedication, resilience, and sportsmanship throughout the run on Monday. Special congratulations to those who secured top positions in their races, and a shout-out to all participants for their efforts. Your hard work and perseverance have truly paid off, making us all proud.
As we look forward to the next term, excitement is building for the next two sports: Touch Football and Soccer. Training and practice sessions will be conducted during lunchtimes to prepare students for these sports. These sessions will focus on skill development, game tactics, and fitness, ensuring all participants can enjoy and excel in these activities.
I encourage all students to get involved, try something new, and make the most of the sporting opportunities available over the holidays. Engaging in sports outside of school is crucial for well-being. It helps us stay fit, make new friends, and develop important life skills like teamwork and perseverance. Whether it's touch football, soccer, gymnastics, swimming, or any other enjoyable activity, staying active is key to a healthy lifestyle.
Please contact me if you need more information about sports available outside the school environment.
Stay active, stay healthy, and let's make the next term another successful one for our school sports teams!
Yours in sport,
Mr Herrmann
News from our Deputy Principal, Leader of Learning and Teaching/Diversity - 28 March 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
Learning & Teaching
Professional Learning Teams - St Rita’s has a proud tradition of investing in the professional development of our staff. This commitment continues with our Professional Learning Team meetings, held each term. Next week marks our second meeting of the year, where teachers will analyse DIBELS (reading) data, plan for Term 2, moderate student writing, and share hands-on mathematics activities. These meetings always focus on student data with the goal of improving student outcomes.
NAPLAN
Our students have successfully completed all NAPLAN assessments, including Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language, and Numeracy. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our dedicated staff for their diligent preparation and invaluable support in helping our students prepare for these tests. Results will be distributed to families via the MyCE app, along with the new Report Cards this year.
Assessment Time
As we approach the final weeks of Term 1, our teachers and students are busy completing assessments to demonstrate their learning so far. Everyone learns differently and at their own pace, and you can be very proud of the progress your child has made over the past nine weeks.
Dive into a Book
Cherish Reading Moments with Your Child! With the Easter Holidays approaching, I wish everyone a joyful and safe Easter period. I encourage you to support your child in maintaining or building positive reading habits during the holidays.
Reading is crucial in a child's literacy journey, fostering a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem as they develop skills to engage academically, socially, and emotionally. Please refer to the infographic below to explore the benefits of reading.
Healthy Food, Healthy Minds
Creating healthy lunches for school is a wonderful way to ensure your child gets the nutrition they need to thrive. Involving your child in the process can make it a fun, educational activity, helping them learn about healthy eating habits. Plus, it gives them a sense of ownership and excitement about their meals, making them more likely to enjoy and eat their lunch. If you are looking for great recipes follow this link to the National Lunchbox Week where you can find recipes, fact sheets, guides and videos. https://www.lunchboxweek.org/?mc_cid=bd7c92dfbb&mc_eid=a842cb221f
Happy Easter and safe holidays.
Kind Regards,
Mrs Gallagher

Tickets are on sale each morning this week and next week for our St Rita’s Easter Raffle. Tickets are 50 cents each, and all proceeds go to our wellbeing fund.
Student Voice Forum
Today, the Year 6 students and I are attending the Student Voice Forum at Good Counsel College. The Student Voice Forum is an opportunity for students to connect and reflect on what it means to be a member of CEDC – an education community grounded in faith. The Forum invites students to listen deeply and share courageously, to learn and lead, to become a voice for their community and a person for others. Students will be taught listening and leading skills throughout the Forum. They will work with leaders from CES to help inform system-wide decisions and actions throughout 2025. We look forward to a day of learning and growth.
Mass at Ozcare Innisfail Aged Care Facility (Warina Lakes)

News from our School Counsellor - 28 March 2025
As you know, St Rita’s South Johnstone, is committed to creating a safe and caring environment for your child. We want to ensure that our students are set up for success and that our school culture is one that is rooted in respect and kindness.
On that note, we are thrilled to be implementing an internationally recognized program with our year 3 and 4 students in Term 2, Friendology 101 by URSTRONG. This wellbeing program empowers children with the skills, language, and self-confidence to be better friends and develop healthier friendships. Through a series of 8 sessions, the students will learn language to better express their feelings, stand up for themselves, and put out Friendship Fires (URSTRONG’s term for conflict). A key element of Friendology 101 is teaching students the difference between normal conflict and bullying. We strongly believe this program’s focus on teaching the skills to develop healthy relationships, starting at a young age, is the proactive and preventative approach and, ultimately, a possible solution to future bullying episodes in school and beyond. Friendology 101 also helps students and teachers establish a common language so that they can co-identify social issues and learn to better communicate solutions. As social-emotional wellbeing and character education are already such an integral part of our school’s philosophy, this friendship program aligns perfectly with our values. Research clearly demonstrates that children who have healthy friendships are involved in more leadership roles, have higher self-esteem, a more positive body image, feel empowered and more in control of their social lives, perform better academically, feel more comfortable talking to their parents and teachers about peers and conflict and make smarter decisions in future relationships.
As the program unfolds, we hope you will keep the conversation going at home. We are excited to watch our students strengthen their social skills by becoming more resilient, empowered, and empathetic friends. We aim to work with our grade 3 and 4’s specifically to start, as this is the age where Friendships truly mean the world and, as a result, form intimate, deeply connected relationships. During the tween stage, their unique character begins to emerge and their interests, passions, likes, and dislikes become more integral to their personality. However, no relationship is perfect (Friendship Fact #1) and it’s just a matter of time before friction becomes flames – what URSTRONG calls, a Friendship Fire®. It is a natural instinct to seek harmony in close relationships and, therefore, innately dread conflict. Some children might initially cope with conflict on their own by repressing the uncomfortable feelings or adjusting their own behaviour to accommodate the other person. When the Friendship Fire® is not put out, however, it escalates, feelings become intense, and the Fire gets bigger inside leading to wellbeing and mental health issues as well as behavioural changes.
In an effort to deal with these feelings and put out the Fire, children are tempted to choose inappropriate ways to feel better. They can roll their eyes, build alliances, gossip, use exclusionary tactics, become passive-aggressive, end the friendship, and so on. These indirect ways of managing conflict, called relational aggression, allow children to portray a false appearance to the outside world of “being nice to everyone.” Depending on social status and level of confidence, some children are more overt or aggressive about their Fires, while others turn inward and suffer silently. The story, however, is the same…children not having the tools to manage conflict in an open, honest way that respects themselves and others. We will be mindfully implementing the Friendology 101 program which helps understand what is normal in a friendship and create friendships that are transparent. We learn how to safely and comfortably manage conflict to maintain and foster healthy relationships so they’re less likely to engage in stereotypical behaviours and more likely to have a transparent, healthy, and effective conversation with their friend. Children will learn how to assert themselves with kindness, empathy, and understanding, building stronger and more resilient selves and friendships.
For more information about the program, please visit https://urstrong.com/parents/. Thank you for your continued support at home. As you know, my door is always open and please be in touch if you have any questions.
