Principal's Report - 27 February 2025
Dear Parents and Carers,
Our school year has started well, thank you for your organisation and diligence. It is our ‘awesome privilege’ to be in our organisation of Catholic Education. We are so fortunate to be able to shape, grow and nurture the minds of our young people in our care. In partnership with you, we truly are in a privileged position to fulfil this ‘awesome’ undertaking that is Catholic Education at St. Rita’s.
All teachers and leadership have thoroughly examined each student's learning profile and data as to where that student is at with Maths and English. We have targeted our teaching to each individual student to ensure growth and improvement in results. As Principal of St. Rita’s, I am very proud to lead a school who intensely caters for all learners through intervention to meet grade level standard, be their best and also cater for gifted & talented students. Our academic success and student growth success is no accident as we pursue it intently with passion. I refer to the great soccer player Pele's definition of success as it is how we operate at our magnificent school:
“St. Rita’s success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.” - Pele
Also, if you are interested in sharing wisdom to inform Catholic Education - Diocese of Cairns Strategic Directions please do so by 6th March. The survey is anonymous and very minimal - only a few open-ended questions.

Forward to a Better World, Mrs Bryan.

Dear Parents and Carers,
If you have a child in Year 3 or Year 5, please have a read of the following NAPLAN timetable to see what dates and times they will be sitting the tests.
Year 3:
Writing - Week 7, Wednesday, March 12, 9am
Reading - Week 8, Monday, March 17, 9am
Conventions of Language - Week 8, Tuesday, March 18 9am
Numeracy - Week 8, Wednesday, March 19, 9am
Year 5:
Writing - Week 7, Wednesday, March 12, 9am
Reading - Week 7, Wednesday, March 12, 11:30am
Conventions of Language - Week 7, Thursday, March 13, 11:30am
Numeracy - Week 7, Friday, March 14, 9am
What if my child is absent for a particular test?
Students can sit NAPLAN tests at different times to the class; however the tests must be done in the above order, so if they miss one test, they will more than likely have to sit all tests separate to their class.
Kind Regards,
Mrs Gallagher

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
It is the halfway point of Term 1, and it has been bustling with activity. We have many more exciting events on the horizon.
Lent
We are now leading into one of the most significant periods of the liturgical calendar, Lent. This is a time of reflection and preparation. Tuesday of Week 6 is Shrove Tuesday, and we will have pancakes at school to celebrate before the beginning of Lent.
Ash Wednesday Liturgy
Our Ash Wednesday liturgy will take place on Wednesday, 5th March at 9am in St Rita’s Church. This occasion marks the beginning of Lent, and we invite all members of our school community to join us for this special service.
Year 5 and 6 Leadership Day
I would like to extend a huge thank you to our wonderful Year 5 and 6 pupils for their participation in the recent Leadership Day. Their attentiveness and enthusiasm were truly commendable. They have shown themselves to be outstanding role models, and we look forward to seeing them put their newfound leadership skills into practice within our school community.
Prayer for Pope Francis
Our Pope, the leader of the Catholic Church, is ill at the moment. We pray to our Mother Mary:
Mary, send Your Spirit of healing, that She may accompany our shepherd Pope Francis in his illness. As he endures pain and discomfort, give him strength and peace. May he experience the continued grace of Your mercy. May Your unconditional love comfort him and help him heal.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community.
Best wishes,
Ms Heaney
Sport News with Mr Herrmann - 27 February 2025
Hi St Rita's,
We are moving, moving, moving, getting ready for school cross country on Monday 24th March 1:00pm-3:00pm. Parents welcome.
Shout to our Senior Rugby League Team and Senior Netball Team as we are very proud of grit & determination and conduct.
In our Physical Education (PE) lessons, we are currently building our running endurance for the upcoming cross-country event this term. By running longer distances, we are strengthening our hearts and lungs, which will help us run faster and longer without getting tired.
I would also like to stress the importance of building a routine outside of school that involves movement and physical activity; such as touch football, soccer, gymnastics, swimming, and other enjoyable sports and activities. Engaging in sports outside of school is crucial for well-being. It helps us stay fit, make new friends, and develop important life skills like teamwork and perseverance. Please contact me if you need more information about sports available outside the school environment.
Let's keep up the great work and continue to enjoy the benefits of staying active!
Yours in sport,
Mr Herrmann

As the new school year commences it is completely normal for children to feel some uncertainty or anxiety towards these changes as new classes, teachers, schoolwork, and routines challenge us. The additional element of our uncertain weather may cause children and families some disruption to establishing routines initially, but adaptation and resilience are key components that we must foster in our children through conversations and modelling of healthy behaviours. Nurturing confidence and resilience in our children are essential to supporting their growth and development. Involving children in morning routines before school and having pick up plans in place can build and maintain strong connections, so we can foster an environment where our children thrive with assurance and self-assurance.
Issues with drop offs
Children communicate their needs and emotions through behaviours, often in ways that may seem puzzling or challenging to parents. Miscuing behaviours, such as tantrums, withdrawal, or defiance, are signals of underlying feelings that children may find difficult to express verbally. Recognizing these behaviours as attempts to communicate can be transformative in our approach to parenting. Children may also have physiological responses to feelings they cannot express such as unexplained tummy pains or headaches that could be feelings of nerves or excitement. Children thrive with clear, consistent, and predictable, expectations and routines and establishing these early in the year is a wonderful foundation that proves beneficial as the year progresses. St Rita’s classrooms and teachers are setting these for learning and growth of our students and having them in place at home allows for happy, healthy children in our learning community as well as minimising the tears and drop-off difficulties.
Circle of Security Parenting and Triple P parenting resources and courses have some exceptional information and practical tips for families to assist with routines, school drop offs and maintaining connection with our children, as they return to school. When children feel securely attached to their caregivers, they develop a strong foundation of trust and confidence. Here are some ways to nurture this connection:
- Be Present: Take moments throughout the day to engage with your child fully. Whether it's during playtime, mealtimes, or bedtime routines, offer your undivided attention and attunement to their needs.
- Start with a positive attitude: Help your child navigate their feelings by acknowledging and validating them. Look for positives and things to look forward to rather than dwelling on fears. Let them know that all emotions are acceptable and provide a safe space for expression.
- Set Boundaries with Love: Establishing boundaries is essential for a child's sense of security. Communicate rules and expectations calmly and respectfully, ensuring that they understand the reasons behind them.
- Follow through with consequences both positive and negative: Avoid bribery for compliance but ensure your child understands they can rely on you to do what you say you are going to do. If you say you will check on them, go check on them, even if they are asleep. This builds trust and reinforces connection so they can rely on you to feel safe. It is important to not make flippant threats when feeling overstimulated as these are harder to follow through with and the consequence should match the behaviour. Child safety and trust is always the most crucial element of connection.
- Encourage Independence: Foster your child's autonomy by allowing them to make age-appropriate choices and decisions. Simple choices such as what flavour yoghurt to pack in their lunch and apple or banana provides opportunities for autonomy without our children coming to school with a lunchbox filled with chips. Celebrate their accomplishments and opinions, no matter how small, to instil confidence in their abilities and thoughts.
- Set up ‘Goodbye Rituals’: This could be a high-five, hug, kiss or personal handshake. You could sing a line of a song together or have a saying that you repeat to one another. Something personal and repeated to create a pattern and ease into the farewell for the day.
By nurturing a strong connection with our children, we can empower them to become confident to enter their new classrooms and adjust to these initial changes much easier allowing for their learning and sense of belonging in the classroom to flourish.
